The Green Brigade Youth Group and Camps
Year: 2010
Country: Dominican Republic
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Environment
Project Investment: $189.24
Project Launch:
There is little taught about the environment and environmental problems in the Dominican Republic where contamination and deforestation are rampant. To address the need for environmental education, Peace Corps Volunteers started a Brigada Verde group in El Batey. Brigada Verde is an environmental youth group that runs environmentally themed lessons and activities relating to the world and more specifically to problems within the Dominican Republic. The course was presented to a group of teenagers from the community who began disseminating this information to younger children. With a $266 grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program in 2010, the Peace Corps organized a series of weekend camps that targeted youth in the 8-12 age range and educated them about how they can help improve the environmental health of their community. The curriculum was comprised of talks and arts and crafts activities that taught simple ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle to lessen the environmental impact we make on the earth.Explore other Projects
