Taroudant is a city of approximately 80,000 people in the Souss valley in southern Morocco. Despite significant interest from youth, there are relatively few opportunities for organized sports in Taroudant. Facing this reality, the Nour Association was created in 2009 with the objective of providing an opportunity for children in Taroudant to play organized basketball. With World Connect’s support, the association began training sessions twice per week, organized matches against nearby towns and organized a tournament for more than 60 participants. The association consists of ten experienced players above the age of 18, including several who have played for elite amateur teams in Morocco and are active in teaching younger players the fundamentals of basketball. The project increased the skills of all players and provided the opportunity for more children and youth in Taroudant to play basketball and increased local interest in the sport.
