Project Launch: 12-23-20
In Chipata, Zambia, local community organization Nutrition for Better Communities has designed a nutrition and economic support program to support women and families. With this grant, the organization will buy an incubator which can hold up to 1,500 eggs at a time to produce chicks. 600 women in the community will receive 15 one month old hybrid village chickens, locally produced feed, and training on how to properly raise and take care of the chickens. The chickens can be sold to generate income and provide a source of nutrition for families. Once each family has a few chickens, they can reproduce and the hens will warm the next generation of eggs until the chicks hatch. For that reason, the incubator will be mobile and be used to hatch chicks for different villages beyond Chipata once the 600 families receive their first batch of chickens.
