Acting for Change- Social Theatre in El Salvador
This project seeks to equip students with the necessary tools to use theatre as a mechanism for social change. A local school’s theatre group will travel to attend workshops from a prominent theatre arts NGO, allowing the students to receive advice and training from local professionals. The students will then create their own original work using personal stories collected from community elders that reflects the town’s history and culture, specifically focusing on El Salvador’s 12-year civil war. The students’ performance will help to preserve collective memory through an interesting, engaging, and creative endeavor.
The youth group participated in a theatre workshop lead by a professional theatre group in Suchitoto, a community known for its support of art and theatre. The youth group had the opportunity to watch two performances done by the professional group. Afterwards, the professionals watch the youth group perform. They exchanged ideas and the theatre group offered the youth group advice and answered their questions. This experience allowed the youth to meet people outside of their community and hear from people who are passionate about theatre. The group is sustainable due to the members’ motivation to continue using theatre to bring new ideas to their community and their desire to grow as a group.
