A $500 grant was awarded by World Connect’s Kids to Kids program in 2009 to host a regional “Arte por la Paz” (Art for Peace) workshop and exposition in Candelarita, Costa Rica. Students who attended were 4th, 5th and 6th graders all of whom created a work of art to express the meaning and importance of peace that they displayed or presented on the day of the workshop. The students took part in educational workshops throughout the day focusing on painting/drawing, poetry, music/dance, and theatre. The project fostered group cooperation, improved conflict resolution, and gave students a creative outlet to express their feelings and dreams for the future. Several people from the school commented on how the workshop raised school spirit and how the community feels like the students put Candelarita on the map.
