Biodigestor in Rancho Quemado

Year: 2014
Country: Costa Rica
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Health
Project Investment: $500.00

Project Launch:

A biodigester converts animal waste into natural gas, which can be used for cooking, electricity, and more. It is completely sustainable and can save a family substantial amount of money (around $20 a month), as well as eliminate the need to purchase gas or cut firewood, resulting in money saved and a reduced environmental impact and carbon footprint. There is already one biodigestor in the Rancho Quemado community, and due to its success and efficiency, there are more community members interested in building their own.

This project will lead to the construction of a biodgester on a small-scale family-owned pig farm in the community. Every day, the family will “feed” their biodigester with pig waste, and use the produced natural gas for cooking and electricity needs. Over the next five years, the family will save an estimated $1,200-$2,400 on gas expenses.

Project Update: 8/10/2016

The biodigester has been entirely constructed. However, the catchment for the processed material will not seal to the central apparatus. As such, the machine cannot be used until a proper sealant is located. Follow-up work will focus on obtaining sufficient sealant so that the device can be put to use.
