Community Health Worker Bikes

Year: 2015
Country: Rwanda
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Health
Project Investment: $500.00

Project Launch: 2-3-16

The 33 community health workers affiliated with the Kibondo Health Center are vital for the surrounding eleven villages, as they act as the link between the villages and the health center to distribute medicine, educate community members on health topics and preventative methods, monitor pregnant women, and treat common illnesses. Through their services, they support the work of the health center and hospital and act as the frontline of health care for villagers. This project will provide six bicycles, as well as spare tires, horns and locks, to allow community health workers to travel with ease to remote households within their villages, to visit more households in a given day, and to respond more quickly to health emergencies.

Project Update: 4/30/16

Six bikes have been built and distributed to community health workers in four different villages. The village chiefs are all very supportive of the initiative and donated money to purchase bike locks. Over the next few months, data will be collected to see how many more households the community health workers can reach with additional mobility.
