Construction of Dry Composting Latrines

Year: 2014
Country: Peru
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Health
Project Investment: $2,805.00

Project Launch:

Sayapampa is a small town of 78 families located in the Andes at an elevation of approximately 2,700 meters above sea level. For six months out of the year (Nov- April), there are frequent strong rains. The community lacks employment opportunities and the majority of the community members have a low level of education. Those who work in schools or other local institutions are usually from other parts of the district or from bigger cities. The community also lacks important health and sanitation knowledge.

This project will support the construction of eight dry composting latrines. The community will be provided with educational sessions where family members will learn about important health topics, such as hand washing, safe storage and treatment of water, routes of contamination and proper maintenance of latrines. Community members will also assist with installing the latrines. After the latrines are built, community members will form a committee that will be responsible for monitoring and evaluating the latrines on a monthly basis to see whether or not they are being properly maintained and hygienic practices are being implemented.
