About this Project

Project Launch: 12-8-25

The Gataraga Sector of Musanze District in the Northern province of Rwanda lies at the foothills of the volcanoes mountains. As a result, most of the soils in the sector are rocky-volcanic soils. This has posed a challenge for majority of households in the sector to dig pit latrines for their waste disposal, coupled with the lack of appropriate soil to make mud bricks for construction. In May 2025, Gataraga sector staff reported 232 households without decent latrines and 71 households with no latrine at all, which increases the risk of diseases such as diarrhea and other hygiene-related illnesses.

A $12,000 grant from world Connect Rwanda will be matched with $5,000 of their own contributions and the funds will be used to purchase construction materials such as bricks, cement, sand, roofing iron sheets and doors as well as hire labour to construct 50 decent, durable and hygienic latrines for 50 most vulnerable households in the sector. The local community health workers and the project team will also provide hygiene education to the households on how to maintain the latrines and prevention of hygiene-related illnesses.
