About this Project

Project Launch: 12-18-25

Gatovu Integrated Development Program (IDP) Model village, located in Gataraga Sector of Musanze District, Northern province of Rwanda  is home to 312 people living in 64 households with semi-detached houses of four housing units each. The village was constructed by the government of Rwanda in 2019 to provide shelter for the poor and vulnerable residents of Musanze district who were living in areas putting their lives at risk or lacked decent shelter. Other than the shelter provided by the government, residents of Gatovu model village do not have land or any other source of livelihood. They survive on finding casual work in the community such as farming for other people or working on construction sites.

To increase their income opportunities, residents of this model village have decided to initiate a sheep farming project where each of the 64 households will be given 2 female sheep. Due to the cool climate of the area, sheep grow well, they reproduce atleast twice a year and do not require alot of feeding pasture. Families are expecting to obtain manure from sheep waste which will be used to grow vegetables on their family compound as well as generate income from sale of sheep offsprings once the sheep reproduce.

A $7000 grant from World Connect Rwanda will purchase sheep for these households, while the housholds will also raise $3,000 to construct shelter for the sheep, acquire veterinary drugs and services to help them in caring for the sheep.
