Girls Don’t Quit project is taking place in Arikanki, a village community located towards the outskirt of Ibadan, Oyo state. Arikanki is amongst a cluster of other small villages and together the villages consist of about 2000 people from diverse ethnic groups. 80% -90% of the people living in Arikanki earn their living from farming, while few of them are animal hunters and traders. Majority of the community members have little or no formal education, and the children are limited to only one school, a public primary school in Oretu village. However, teachers are reluctant to teach in this school, due to the distance, bad roads, unavailability of public transport system, lack of electricity and other basic amenities. There is no other educational or training facility within these communities.  These circumstances make education and training only an option for the young people, while many are compelled to go to farm with their parents. Girls Don’t Quit aims to provide a skill and entrepreneurship training designed for teenage girls and young women living in the Arianki community and surrounding villages. The training will focus on skills that are able to yield financial outcomes to the participants. These skills include sustainable fashion designing, shoe and bag making, Adire textile making and Branding of souvenir items. The 12 months training will empower the participants with business skills, like marketing, basic bookkeeping, and communication skill. They will be mentored on how to start a profitable business on their own.
