The El Salvador Girls Leading Our World (GLOW) Camp project is a collaborative effort between local Peace Corps Volunteers and female community leaders to focus on increasing the self-esteem and leadership abilities of young women. Like many other developing countries, El Salvador is home to “machista” gender roles in which boys leave the household to study and work while girls are expected to remain in the home to do household work. Without female role models that provide alternatives, young girls are often unaware of their options outside of the household and develop an inferiority complex, which makes them disinclined to speak out or share their ideas. The GLOW project addressed these negative trends by encouraging young women to find their voice as valued members of society. During a three day camp, supported with funding from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program, young women participated in activities designed to build their confidence by developing skills such as assertiveness, leadership and team building and in workshops about feminine health, self-defense, AIDS/HIV, healthy relationships and gender equality. Campers met professional women role-models from throughout the country and participated in life planning workshops. By offering activities that improved girls’ well-being, the camp left participants more aware of their own health, with a new sense of self worth and a stronger self-image. After the camp, the young women returned home with the belief that every woman can make a difference as a worthy member of society.
