Ikobe Secondary School Computer Lab
Project Launch:
The village of Ikobe, Kenya is a small farm-based community whose residents mostly cultivate maize, tea, and coffee for commercial export. Educational opportunities are limited, and without textbooks and computers, students have little opportunity to learn beyond what their teachers tell them during the school day. This project will lead to the installation of a computer lab at the high school in the village of Ikobe. Currently, the closest computer is 16 km away. The school will launch an extracurricular computer-training course for its students as soon as the lab is up and running. Additionally, once the lab is established in the school, the administration will roll out a plan for opening the computer lab up to the local community, in specified hours, as an income-generating internet and technology resource center.
Project Update
10 computers and a projector were installed at Ikobe Secondary School. The computer lab has officially opened and holds weekly computer lessons for students. During lunch and recess hours, the lab is used as a resource center for students to learn and socialize.
Testimonials
"Now we are learning with computers instead of just a chalk board. It is much more interesting to learn with computers in computer class and other classes where teachers can use the projector. I have never touched a computer until this class and I am happy to tell my friends and family that I know how to use a computer now." - Harry, Project Participant
