Project Equip
Project Launch: 10-27-21
Project Equip is taking place in Akure, a city in south-western Nigeria, known as the largest city and capital of Ondo State, having a total population of 484,798 people. Lepers at the Camp of Hope, otherwise known as “Ago Ireti” in Oba Ile, Akure, Ondo State is home to 200 inhabitants. The lepers are subject to poor welfare and terrible conditions of living in the 75-year-old colony. The general practice in Akure is to isolate lepers from where members of the society live. They are confined to a secluded environment, and they are excluded from the larger society, creating an environment that fosters stigma. Project Equip aims to focus on empowering the leper community through the production of gari. Gari production has been the main source of income for the leper community for about over 20 years. Project Equip will allow lepers to participate in gari production and their dependents will in turn take the gari to the market to sell on their behalf.
