Rabbits project to change lives of Bumbogo Women and girls
Project Launch: 12-8-22
Bumbogo sector in Gasabo district is a peri-urban community on the outskirts of Kigali city. This community is mostly occupied by low income earners some of whom do not have any land and are attracted to the community due to the affordable rental housing structures. Poverty is very high among the residents in this community and the majority of them can barely afford basic necessities for their families such as food, health insurance, scholastic materials for their children etc.
Funding from this project will support 200 families in the Bumbogo community to start rabbit farming. Rabbits are known to produce and multiply quickly, so they can be a source of protein and food security and families can earn income from sale of offspring. Also, families will be utilizing manure from rabbit droppings for growing vegetables on their family compounds.
A rabbit pass-on program will be initiated once the rabbits reproduce to incorporate another 200 households in the community. The project is expected to reach and impact at least 600 households within one year.
