Reviving Costa Rica's Coffee Traditions
Project Launch:
Café Los Volcanes is a family-owned, family-operated microbusiness that produces field-to table coffee using sustainable farming methods. A husband and wife, who are both third generation coffee farmers, run the business. The couple offers intimate, hands-on tours to both domestic and international visitors. The husband leads the group through the process of harvesting and roasting coffee beans, explaining the Costa Rican coffee industry and how Café Los Volcanes started, while the wife prepares coffee for the end of the tour. The couple wishes to expand the focus of the tour from solely coffee to reflect Costa Rican traditions of hospitality and respect for the environment.
This project will lead to the construction of a reception area for visitors, equipped with a communal table, chairs and an antique wooden oven. The oven will be used to give traditional cooking lessons, adding another authentic element to the tour. The local women’s group will showcase their crafts at Café Los Volcanes, exposing tourists to cultural goods and providing the artisans with another source of income. This project will also implement a more robust marketing strategy in order for the micro-business to boost their local advertising efforts, presence on social media and partnerships with national tourism organizations. The aim of this project is to improve Café Los Volcanes’ ability to provide visitors with an interactive experience that emphasizes Costa Rican customs and traditions.
