Project Launch: 12-22-23
Root Foundation, a local NGO in Batsinda, a remote, low-income community on the outskirts of Kigali, has been training mothers of street children enrolled into their programs in order to tackle to challenges at household level that are leading the children to the streets such as poverty. Todate, about 80 women have graduated from 6 months of tailoring training but they never got a chance to use their skills to earn income because they never had sewing machines to use.
A $4,959.68 grant will be used to purchase 20 new sewing and knitting machines that will be given to 20 women alongside another 15 sewing machines that were used by women in the ISIMBI Support Haus benefiting a total of 35 women who will establish a tailoring and knitting workshop. The women will be given refresher training so that they can start taking tailoring jobs from the community.
Each of the women will use the sewing/knitting machine to earn income and they will repay 50% of the cost of the machine to root foundation in a period of 12 months so that another cohort of women can also be supported to acquire their own machines and go out to work and earn income.
