Legacy Women: Women's Drum Legacy of Power

About this Project

Women's Legacy of Drum Power (WLOD) creates welcoming spaces for women, girls, and gender nonbinary New Yorkers to learn, connect, and celebrate Afro-Caribbean drumming traditions. Over the next year, WLOD will bring seven free drum jams and a community celebration to neighborhoods in all five boroughs. Each session combines meditation, hands-on instruction from master teaching artists, and an open drum jam where everyone can take part, whatever their experience, followed by time to connect over refreshments. Beyond the music, WLOD will identify and mentor women at each site who want to lead drum jams and community activities in their own neighborhoods, and a monthly e-newsletter will keep the growing network connected between gatherings. Grant funds will cover the costs of keeping every event free, including venues, artist honoraria, instruments, coordination, and outreach.
