Abundance Rice & Maize Mill
Project Launch: 12-27-19
Abundance Worldwide, together with the Mbando community, will facilitate the installation of a rice mill to produce, package, and sell rice in Mbando, Malawi. The mill will be managed by the Mbando Women's Group. The 20 members will be trained in financial literacy to support them in managing their funds and business well. Community members will provide rice grown in the area for milling both as members of the group and as individuals. The rice husks will be sold and used as an alternative energy source. The project will reduce the distance travelled to other rice mills and encourage members to form cooperatives to grow more rice, thereby increasing their household income.
Project Update: 4-29-20
Four months after receiving the grant, Abundance Worldwide has started financial literacy training for the women in the project. The women have opened a bank account for their group and identified suppliers. They are now set to run the rice & maize mill, though the COVID-19 pandemic is delaying their launch. The community is excited about the project as it will bring employment to some of the youth. Having closer access to a rice mill is also expected to boost the rice production in the area.
