Broadening Horizons
Project Launch:
Dependence on agriculture and lack of employment opportunities in El Salvador contributes to high school dropout rates, and this issue is particularly concerning in Los Limones (90%) and Amapala (75%). Many youth see immigration to the United States, and not education, as their best hope for creating a better life. This project aims to increase the interest in and access to unique educational experiences for youth in these two communities by organizing an activity day led by Peace Corps Volunteers that introduces youth to science experiments, arts and crafts, and team building activities. The project is sustainable in that local teachers and youth outreach volunteers are being trained to lead these activities and incorporate them into school activities on a permanent basis.
