Fruit Tree Nursery for Malomo
Project Launch: 10-18-19
The Malomo Permaculture Committee will create a fruit tree nursery garden where 4,000 seedlings will be planted and raised. Once matured, the seedlings will be sold to re-establish the nursery, sow new seeds, and fund other community permaculture projects. The idea is to help community members gain access to fruit trees to replant in areas that have been deforested, while at the same time provide the community with a source of food and income once the fruits are mature and sold to community members.

With a $350.07 World Connect grant, the ten members of the Malomo Permaculture Committee raised 2,560 fruit seedlings out of the planned 3,470 seedlings representing 73.8% success rate. All members have received 50 seedlings to establish their own orchards while the remainder have been sold, generating over $1,000. 40% of the income was kept to allow the members to develop another round of seedlings in the coming months. The community now has access to fruit seedlings. and five youth groups have come to learn from their process. Each group has since started preparations to raise their own seedlings in their respective areas. In the long run, this project will also contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change in the area.
