The Girls Softball Camp project created a unique experience for 40 young girls from a community where girls are generally not encouraged to participate in sports. The camp provided the girls with the opportunity visit a softball field away from the distractions and responsibilities of their own community, which optimized their ability to improve their individual and team skills. It focused on developing basic proficiency in throwing, catching and batting, and emphasized the concepts of teamwork and leadership. The camp also encouraged the girls to work as leaders in their community. One girl, named Geisy, took the message of leadership to heart: Geisy led her 7th grade team to beat the 9th graders in the championship, and was awarded a leadership prize at the end of camp. A grant from World Connect was used to organize the camp and purchase balls, bats, gloves and bases, in addition to paying for transportation.
