Mbarara 1 is a village of about 420 houses on a mountain. There are no schools or a local health center in this village, and residents make a living by farming maize in surrounding marshes, gathering beans, and growing sorghum behind their homes. The village suffered greatly from a recent drought, so they have chosen to pursue goat farming because it is drought resistant, simple to adopt, boosts manure output to enrich the land, and provides a source of income through the sale of goat kids and meats.
