Jardines Juntas
Project Launch: 6-2-16
In Ticari, unemployment rates are high and the closest supermarket is 15km away, limiting families’ access to nutritious produce. This project will construct a communal greenhouse and garden, which will be tended by a local women’s association. Through extensive trainings and support from the Ministry of Agriculture, the women will grow lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, carrots, squash, corn, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, and onions to be consumed by their families, with excess being sold in local markets to generate an income.
Progress Update: 11/7/2016
The greenhouse is nearly half built and the supplies required for establishing the garden have arrived. With a newly reconstituted association of participants, the project has advanced significantly with a completion date predicted around the start of the new year.
Final Report: 2/28/2017
The garden has been seeded and is expected to be ready for harvest later this season.
Testimonials
"I believe this project will impact the broader community when the women's group starts selling their produce- women and children in Ticari will have better access to healthier food options and they will not have to travel far to find fresh food options." - Beth, Peace Corps Volunteer
"Our plan is that we will harvest the vegetables for our three families and then the rest we will sell under the tent by the highway as part of a fair we are starting. There is a feeling of peace because we won't have to worry about finding the money to buy lettuce because we already invested money in the garden and we are going to have [access] to lettuce and vegetables." - Ana, Project Leader
