Project Launch:

IMPACT Learning Center is an elementary school in a poor rural region of Malabog, Philippines, where there are approximately 500 students enrolled for the 2013-2014 school year. The school is small and low achieving and the facilities are limited - garbage is burned, water is pumped from the ground, and there is no Internet. The school itself sits on the National Highway with the traffic zipping by and posing a danger to children walking to school. IMPACT Learning Center was the lowest achieving school out of 22 in the 2011-2012 school year and this project aims to improve student performance and learning readiness, particularly in the area of math. Essential supplies and learning tools will be purchased to enhance math curriculum students, offering them greater opportunity for school advancement.


Project Update:

Essential visual aids and learning tools, such as math manipulatives and meter sticks, have been bought for the IMPACT Learning center. Teachers from the United States also donated educational tools, such as protractors, calculators, compasses, and rulers.

Using math manipulatives helps promote the understanding of math concepts in a visual and engaging way. The third graders are using Base Ten manipulatives (cubes, rods, flats) to learn the meaning of division, and the sixth graders are using cuisenaire rods to learn fractions.
