About this Project

Project Launch: 1-21-20

The Light Up project will distribute 200 energy saver lamps to 200 girls in forms three and four in rural Community Day Secondary Schools (CDSS) of Draper, Ulumba. Approximately 66 lamps will be distributed at each of the three schools at the beginning of the school term and will be returned at the end of the term. The lamps will enable girls study at night, subsequently improving their classroom performance as they will have enough time to prepare and understand concepts and topics.

Project Update: 5-5-20

With $1,237.99 World Connect grant funding, Girl Rise Up led by Chikondi Chauwa, a Young African Leaders Initiative Mandela Washington Fellow, has partnered with three schools where they have distributed 90 solar lamps to students to enable them study at night. While 90 students are benefitting as individuals, the lamps are benefiting over 600 students through group study sessions, held in nine classrooms across the three schools every night. The lamps are being used at home now as schools have been temporarily suspended due to the impact of COVID-19.
