Montañas y fronteras: Hope, Family and Migration in San Francisco Apanta
Project Launch: 11-1-17
The rural community of San Francisco Apanta is a beautiful village set in the middle of the mountains in Santa Ana, El Salvador. It has been ravaged by war, gang violence, and economic instability, causing many Apanteños to leave their homes. This project is a documentary about those Apanteños and the choices that they have made in the face of many challenges. The film will document the lives of a church leader, a civil war veteran/community leader, a college student, a cattle farmer, and a former school principal running for mayor. Viewers will hear how their lives have changed since the Peace Corps first arrived and what they have done since the organization's evacuation from the country in 2016. The documentary will also take viewers to West Orange, New Jersey, where many who left Apanta have sought refuge. Viewers will learn about the lives of a dentist who has become a housekeeper, a long-time construction worker, and a student who came to the country as an unaccompanied minor. Through the story of a people’s resilience, this documentary will put a human face to the lives that are being placed in the balance by the current debate over immigration in the United States.
