The District of Mache lies in the Sierra of the northern department of La Libertad in Perú between 3,300 and 3,800 meters above sea level. Within the district, there are 22 small villages. Approximately half the population is under 16 years old, living in conditions of extreme poverty. There is a high rate of uncompleted schooling (84.2%) and 57% of children under five suffer from chronic malnutrition. To create systemic change in the District of Mache, the community proposed the establishment of a model school, with support from World Connect. The model school includes strong youth development, health, environment, and cultural components with the establishment of: youth health promoters supported by a team of faculty members, a serviceable kitchen and vegetable garden, compost/worm bins, an improved nutrition program, and a garbage and recycling program.
