In the Xambeno community there are serious health impacts caused by mercury toxicity from artisinal gold mining. A group of women from 15 impacted villages will train community members in how to stay safe and avoid mercury poisoning. The community members they train will be empowered to pass that knowledge on to still more exposed community members. The women will additionally set up two shops in the area selling personal protective equipment (PPE) to help keep people safe. The project is a component of a larger research project to assess the Established Field Partner, Jackie, is leading around gold mining and adverse health impacts.
