World Map Murals Across Alabama
Project Launch: 9-1-17
The Greater Birmingham Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (GBRPCVs) have painted 15 map murals in underprivileged schools across Alabama. These maps not only beautify spaces, they encourage young people to think beyond their own communities and learn about the world around them. Map painting provides an opportunity for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs), students, teachers, and administrators to work together as a team, and for RPVCs to share stories. Oftentimes, in conjunction with map-painting, students participate in hands-on activities based on geography and global citizenship.
This grant will fund the creation of an indoor and an outdoor portable map kit. The GBRPCVs will identify local community-based organizations and schools interested in murals and continue to paint their way across Alabama. In addition, the group will create a video tutorial for map mural creation, so that anyone can create their own World Map Mural Project.
