Computer Lab Expansion and Training

Year: 2015
Country: Rwanda
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Education
Project Investment: $4,216.78

Project Launch:

G.S. Murunda is a 12-year school that provides education to the less advantaged students of the surrounding community. This project will expand the school’s computer lab with nine new computers, a printer, projector, external hard drive and five modems for internet access, enabling students to sharpen their research, critical thinking and computer skills. Students and teachers will participate in a rigorous ICT training, learning how to maintain and repair the computers and equipment, increasing its lifespan and potential to impact students’ education for years to come.

Project Update

After being transported via truck for three hours on a dirt path, the nine computers were successfully delivered to G.S. Murunda. Computer classes will begin this month and scores from the national exam will serve as an indicator of the computer lab's impact. The whole community is extremely excited about the renovated computer lab, which is reflected in the number of new students who enrolled for the 2016 school year.

Final Report

The school has acquired and set up the nine computers in a lab that now will allow students to work individually on each machine.  Classes have also enabled the students to understand computer components, proper computing posture, and operations.

Testimonials

"My students are so happy because they used to study with three or four students on one computer. It was really hard! Also, the teachers now have access to computers and they are going to be trained so they will have more skills and can grow professionally. " - Marie Rose, Computer Teacher

"My classmates and I hope to pass our national exams this year and the computers will help because it will increase our time with the machines and our knowledge. Many of us want to go to university for ICT, but if we cannot go, we can still have the skills that we have learned at this school to find a job". - Immaculee, Project Participant

"For me, I learned many important things like how to troubleshoot a computer, the inside parts of a computer, and the outside parts of a computer. I also learned how I can use a computer in my daily life by knowing the different types of computers and computer lab rules." - Pacifique, Project Participant

"I am the headmaster of G.S. Murunda. I am very grateful for this project because of the success it has been met with in our students. The number of students who share a computer has decreased. Now, we have no students sharing a computer because there is enough for each student to have their own. Teachers have also had a chance to improve their research skills and computer skills by using the computers." - Anastase, Project Leader
