Empowerment Skills Acquisition Hub ( Kano)
Project Launch: 10-19-21
Empowerment Skills Acquisition Hub is taking place in the Bompai community, Nasarrawa. Kano state. Bompai is an underserved community with many uneducated and unemployed locals whose major means of livelihood include farming, begging, petty trading, and carpentry. 90% of the women in this community are overburdened by domestic responsibilities as housewives which inadvertently leads to high level of poverty and low self-esteem. The community is inhabited by large polygamous families who live below the poverty line and lack the financial resources to afford a good meal a day or access to quality education. Due to the current socioeconomic state of this community the girl child is very vulnerable to abuse, gender-based violence and early marriage and motherhood. Empowerment Skills Acquisition Hub ( Kano) aims to directly address this challenge by training 100 females, 50 women & 50 girls. The skills to be acquired through this training include catering, sewing and bags/shoe making. The skills hub will avail the 100 females to become self- reliant and be able to care for themselves and their families. During the training, they will be encouraged to utilize their skills and start to make profit immediately, by starting their own business. They are encouraged to open an account in their child’s name and save 5 percent of their income per month towards their child’s education. They will also be encouraged to form an informal alumni group after the training, to hold them accountable to train other women in the community.
