Moribougou Student-Run Chicken Coop

Year: 2017
Country: Senegal
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Economic Opportunity
Project Investment: $708.64

Project Launch: 7-26-17

Moribougou is a community in rural Senegal. Income-generating activities are limited to agriculture, particularly given the climate of the surrounding region. In order to obtain more money to purchase materials to support students, the Moribougou Primary School hopes to construct and operate a chicken coop, replete with a storage room to hold needed materials. Schoolteachers will purchase baby chickens in Bakel that will be raised in Moribougou and sold there and in surrounding villages. After selling chickens, the teachers will purchase another round of baby chicks to continue the business, using the money earned from the sale of the last round of chickens. Students will be in charge of maintaining the chickens on a daily basis and will be taught about proper chicken husbandry and sanitation. In addition, the students will use the chickens to learn economics and how to run a successful business. The profits of the business will help create a bank account for the student body; who will use the funds to purchase school supplies, improve the school, and help fund further education. The use of the funds will be overseen by the teachers at the school. This project will provide an extra source of income for the school, teach the students basic business practices, and empower the students to become strong, creative business leaders.

Project Update: 1-8-18

As of the beginning of 2018, the chicken coop is officially complete along with the storage room. While construction was occurring, teachers initiated a student government. Electrions were held for three positions ont he student council. A female student was successfully selected to one of the three seats. The three elected students nominated 10 students to fill other positions in student government. Half of those nominated were female. The student body will not only have the responsibility of taking care of the chickens, but they will also be in charge of cleaning the school, caring for the garden, and promoting education in the village.

Final Report: 6-13-18

The project brought a second source of funding to Moribougou Elementary School through the use of animal husbandry. Through successfully raising and selling chickens, the students learned the economics surrounding animal husbandry, learned how to take care of chickens, raised funds for the school to purchase new books and pens, bought more chicks to raise and sell for additional school supplies, and celebrated their hard work by throwing an end of the year celebration.
